Scheduling and performing chlorine disinfection of large transmission mains post inspection/repairs is costly and time consuming and wastes large quantities of water to flush the chlorine out. Low power UV light emitters placed on the robotic or Pipe Walker tool (with PPE) run through pipeline would eliminate the need for heavy chlorination. Would require a new UV bulb configuration to fit on "arms" (replacing the petals) and maintaining clearance from sidewalls. UV will disinfect in seconds, instead of hours. Low power lamps could be used to reduce weight and heat build up without water. Will also eliminate the flushing of highly chlorinated water to sewers which could shock downstream wastewater processes.
Hi Lynne - it would be worthwhile discussing this with any water quality personal / groups in your region/network. What value would they gain from this approach - how much would they willing to pay us for it?
I understand UV disinfection systems have defined ‘intensity & saturation’ ratings to properly disinfect contaminated water. Given the considerable technical (neutrally buoyant/ pressure rated UV light systems, additional power requirements) and operational (flow rates, light intensity/coverage) challenges we would need line of sight to considerable ROI to explore this idea further.
This is great!
