With the interest Electroscan (seems to be) raising for its inspection technology I wonder if we could improve on their current-meter inspection technology (and avoid patent infringement) by reversing the concept. Drive modulated current into the ground at the insertion point, and potentially incrementally down the line, and try to detect the modulation signature in the pipe. This would allow the tool to be free swimming rather than tethered. It would also have significant challenges not present in electroscan's (much) simpler topology.
