In designing the HM TransmitterX we are evaluating "tactical grade" IMUs that provide positional accuracy that is 100-1000 times better than the "consumer grade" IMUs in the smart ball. This IMUs are small enough to fit in a smartball shell but too large to integrate with the existing SB electronics. I envision creating a simpler hi-res mapping/tracking only ball. Marshall will have to comment on the improved mapping accuracy this could yield. The raw accel and gyro drift is hugely improved, comments on the resulting improvement from the output of the rolling/SBR calibrated kalman filter is Marshalls domain.
From a client perspective i think this could offer the precision of conventional mapping devices like G3 with the insertion simplicity of SB.
